Marriage-Set-30min-Map
30-min "Wanting to Get Married" Set — Material Map
Companion to IMPORTANT 30 minute set about wanting to get marriedThis file never made it to this site. There's some truly random shit I write in my notes and I can't share it all.. This maps existing vault bits to the 19 theme lines in that file, so the set is assembled from material that already exists. Curation and provenance only — David writes the glue and judges what lands.
> How to read the labels. Each bit is tagged by development status (factual, from the vault, not a > quality rating): > - performed/transcribed — exists as a transcribed set, often with documented audience response > - developed — multi-beat, written out, not necessarily performed > - seed / one-liner — single premise or two-liner, not built out > - backstory (unwritten) — real raw material that is not yet shaped into jokes > > "Density" notes are counts (how many tags/beats a stretch has), not opinions on funniness.
The spine you already wrote (from Workshop-June-8-2026)
This is David's own arc from the June 8 session — not invented here. Use it as the clothesline; bits below hang on it.
1. Thesis: "I want to be good enough to deserve a woman I don't deserve." (Workshop notes it currently bails before landing — see GAPS.) 2. The reframe: other guys see a woman and think "the things I'll do to her"; he thinks "I want to be a better man" → the 401k / sundress / childbearing-hips list. (list itself not transcribed — see GAPS) 3. The fear: "if I meet someone now, she's probably gonna suck because I suck." 4. The insecure-man problem (vault/abyss + gender asymmetry). 5. The obstacles to clear first: porn, self-love, career, insecurity → sex/performance arc. 6. Marriage fears → "best self in the middle of my second divorce" → parents married at 19/17 → can't-afford-the-wedding → marrying a Jewish woman.
Collaborator's load-bearing caution (Workshop §4): don't over-marry the arc. Build bulletproof 3/5/10-min chunks from the biggest laughs first, phase the rest in around them.

GAPS — write-prompts (no vault material; David writes these)
- The thesis line itself — "good enough to deserve a woman I don't deserve." Workshop notes it currently bails before landing. Needs a finished button. - The better-man list — 401k / sundress / childbearing-hips. Mentioned in Workshop, not transcribed anywhere. - 9-year-old divorce counselor — empty (David left a "?"). - My first date — no clean first-date story exists; only adjacent material.
STORY STRUCTURE
Craft principles below are synthesized from documented specials/interviews (external research, not vault material). The running order is ONE option — per your collaborator's caution (Workshop §4), build the bulletproof chunks first and phase the rest in; don't pin minute-exact slots.
Principles (sourced)
- The spine is a problem, not a topic. Not "marriage" — "can this guy fix himself enough to deserve it?" Every bit becomes evidence for/against. (Mark Normand coheres via a consistent lens; yours is a lens with a destination.) - Begin with your ending, build backward. Birbiglia's rule + his funnel: keep the bits you already kill with → group into ~10 chunks → ask "can these be one narrative?" Don't write a story and stuff jokes in. - The turn (the one honest beat) goes ~⅔ in, and the laugh sits ON the dark line (Gulman, The Great Depresh) — your self-incrimination punchline is exactly this tool. Avoid quarantining sincerity in a separate "now I'm serious" section (Brennan's 3 Mics) or building tension you refuse to release (Gadsby, Nanette). Always release with a laugh. - One runner, planted early, paid off late (Mulaney's "horse loose in a hospital" closes on an image, not a speech). Mom-as-proxy is your built-in runner — she voices the audience's verdict 3–4 times; her final reaction can BE the resolution. - Density = the clothesline rule. Story is the wire; jokes are the pay. Rule-of-thumb target ~4–6 laughs/min; don't run >~20–30 sec of pure exposition without a tag/act-out/aside. Compress setups — exposition with no laugh is debt. - Don't open or close weak. Open second-best to buy trust, close strongest; one energy dip only — at the turn.
Provisional running order (swap freely; ● = bulletproof/performed-or-transcribed, ◐ = developed, ○ = thin/seed, ⚠ = GAP to write)
ACT 1 — establish the want + the gap (0–8 min, densest) - ⚠/◐ Cold open: thesis — "married to the idea I'll get married" frame (Theme 1) to plant the want; the "deserve a woman I don't deserve" line still needs its button (GAP). - ● Jewish private school → She Comes First (Theme 11) — origin of the gap. - ● "Everybody hates me" (Theme 10) — `hot.md` flags this as your most-developed new bit, "close to stage-ready." The natural ● anchor for Act 1; "every new person is one person closer to everybody" reframes the whole gap. (Tonally about universal hatred — works as the engine of "why I'm hard to marry," or could anchor its own section.) - ◐ "I'm inspired to be a little better" → the reframe / better-man setup (Themes 4 & 13). - ◐ Insecurity cluster — mirror "I'm mid," height 5'4", body hair (Theme 10). Dense.
ACT 2 — trying and failing, stakes rising (8–20 min) - ◐ Serious-dating strategies — Hinge strategist, ask-her-icks, DMV date, cancelled dates "socks for Christmas" (Themes 6 & 7). - ◐ Why marriage-in-mind isn't practical — test-drive-the-car, marriage then-vs-now (Theme 9). - ◐ Losing my virginity — first time eating out, orgasm renovation (Theme 12) — the sex/performance obstacle arc. - ◐ Insecure-man vault / penetration test (Theme 10) + ◐ maxxing the skill tree (Theme 14). - ◐ Introducing her to my parents — dad forged my signature (Theme 17) — bridges toward the wedding. - (Mom-as-proxy runner reacts across this act.)
THE TURN — one honest beat (~20–24 min, the only dip) - ⚠/backstory Trauma — first-girlfriend post-mortem, "avoidance is emotional violence," forgiving himself (Theme 15). This is the thinnest stretch for joke-density — it's mostly unwritten backstory. Keep the laugh on the line: pair with ◐ dad bits ("rather hit me than hit ON me," "at least I stopped") and land on ◐ anxious optimist ("I deny myself unconditional love") as the floor.
ACT 3 — marriage/wedding payoff + resolution (24–30 min) - ◐ Best version in the second divorce (Theme 2) — the darkly-optimistic answer to the thesis. - ◐ Weird/bargain wedding — then-vs-now, backyard-vs-venue-cancellation, post-nut-clarity decisions (Themes 18 & 19). - Resolution — pick from the four candidates above. Cleanest per the research: the mom-as-proxy verdict as the final punchline (throughline + callback + joke at once), or the "divorced from the idea… fourth idea… alone forever" bookend.
Density read (factual)
- Acts 1–2 are well-stocked with developed/transcribed bits. - The turn is the joke-density risk — its core (Theme 15) is largely unwritten; it leans on backstory. Either write tags into it or keep it short and exit fast. - Single-premise / thin themes: 5 (hot at 40s/50s), 7 (cancelled dates) — pair them rather than standing alone. - Empty (write first): thesis button, better-man list, 9-yr divorce counselor, first date.
