State of the Vault — July 4, 2026

> Full-vault census and diagnosis. Four read-only agents swept: (1) root + all non-jokes > directories, (2) the 248 non-challenge `jokes/` files, (3) all 3,218 `Apple Notes/` files > with a coverage-gap analysis, (4) the developed-material core via the brain's own maps. > Factual reporting only — no ratings. Council-lens notes at the bottom are craft > observations, not verdicts, and no jokes were written.

Navigation: INDEXThis file never made it to this site. There's some truly random shit I write in my notes and I can't share it all. | hot | log

1. The shape of the vault (census)

| Layer | Files | Role (observed, not aspirational) | |---|---:|---| | `Apple Notes/` | 3,218 | The only primary source. All raw material lands here via dictation. ~777k words. Median note = 90 words. Flat, no taxonomy. | | `jokes/` | 348 | Curated bit layer. 100 challenge jokes (all Posted) + 248 others in three date-stamped "generations." | | vault root | 75 | An unfiled inbox: ~40 drafted-but-orphaned bits, ~14 set-list hub files, ~15 empty/stub files, plus meta files. | | `claude-brain/` | 36 | The compiled wiki. Covers Apple Notes through June 13, 2026 + the 100 challenge jokes. | | `sets/` | 12 | Mic/show set lists Mar–Apr 2026, some with drafted prose inside. | | `characters/`, `sketches/`, `written-comedy/`, `longform/` | 1+1+1+0 | Aspirational category dirs, essentially unused. | | `Comedy Study/` | 1 + audio | Dan Mintz special transcript + `transcribe.py` (working faster-whisper script). | | `rick-and-morty/`, `app ideas and notes/`, `Tasks.md` | — | Three non-comedy workstreams sharing the vault. |

The development funnel, in numbers:

``` 3,218 raw captures (Apple Notes) → 248 curated non-challenge jokes/ files → 129 DRAFTED (full joke, single version) → 77 WORKED (alternates, versions, edit history) → ~15 with real performance notes (one event: Potluck, April 12, 2026) → 100 challenge jokes Posted (the one finishing mechanism that ran to completion) ```
The funnel narrows ~40:1 between capture and stage-test. **The corpus does not show a writing-volume problem; it shows a finishing-and-testing bottleneck.**
2. The ten findings that matter
1. The ingest frontier is ~215 notes and growing ~10/day. Apple Notes gained 224 files since the last ingested batch (June 13); ~215 are genuinely new material (the rest are re-touched old notes). Everything after June 13 has no frontmatter — untagged = unprocessed is a usable heuristic.
2. The atomic unit is inconsistent — three granularities coexist. (a) single-premise notes (median 90w); (b) 68 "Addendum to…" files that only make sense joined to a parent note; (c) 317 dated session/setlist/transcript notes each holding 5–20 bits. Any organizing pass needs a splitter for (c) and a joiner for (b).
3. Duplication lives inside Apple Notes, not across folders. Cross-folder redundancy is low (`jokes/` is a genuinely separate curated layer). But within Apple Notes one bit scatters across standalone + setlist-embed + addendum + transcript simultaneously: chest hair appears in 72 files, spite condom in 30. Exact dictation-duplicates exist even in the new material ("main camp" = "Minecraft" = mein kampf, "leased/leashed", "sexed/sex head").
4. Dictation is the capture method and it's lossy. Pervasive homophone garble ("Sir Mansfield Cumming" → "Sir Main still coming", "face for radio" ← "phase for radio"). Filenames are first lines, truncated (156 end in `…`), non-unique, and sometimes wrong: `jokes/Boobs are like dragons.md` actually contains the ick/Treblinka bit.
5. `jokes/` is two-tier and the bottom tier is invisible. ~70 files have frontmatter, `Related:` links, stage notes; ~178 are bare text — no tags, no links, invisible to the `.base` views and the wikilink graph. Development state correlates almost perfectly with frontmatter presence. ~39 bare files already self-labeled `#concept #undeveloped`.
6. 18 near-duplicate clusters in `jokes/` pair a structured "master" with 1–2 raw twins (faking orgasms ×3, women-with-cats ×3, ADHD-at-6 ×3–4, penis-measuring ×5–6, Ryan Gosling ×3…). The structured master is usually the keeper; consolidation is mechanical curation.
7. Two dump files hold ~50+ uncatalogued one-liners (`one liner file shaq gummies…`, `acorns brainstorm bits.md`) counted as two "jokes." The one-liner tier is the least maintained layer of the corpus.
8. The vault's own maps agree on exactly two writing gaps. Beat 3 (who I want to be — the thesis "good enough to deserve a woman I don't deserve" "currently bails before landing") and Beat 6 (how I succeed — "a sincere button — earned, not deflected — does not exist yet"). Every other beat is over-stocked; the maps' own words: "the job there is cutting, not finding."
9. Performance data exists for exactly one event. The April 12 Potluck batch (~15 files) is the only set of bits with recorded audience results outside the challenge. Meanwhile 4 recent mic transcripts (Badger, Schmooze, workshop) sit in Apple Notes un-mined.
10. Housekeeping flags: `Apple Notes/tax.md` contains a password string in plaintext — move it to a password manager and delete the note. 43 empty Apple Notes files + 11 empty root files. 186 files are git-modified (benign: Obsidian bulk-added `stage: "4. Posted"`) — worth a baseline commit. Apple Notes mtimes before ~May 2026 are untrustworthy (bulk touch).
3. Objective notes on the material itself
Mechanics distribution across the 248 non-challenge jokes (counts approximate): - "X is like Y" analogy — ~35+ files, the single most common engine (ADHD/herpes, insecure-man/vault, orgasm/renovation, chess-elo/dating, boobs/dragons…) - Reversal / misdirect — ~30 (bartender spit, "I would beg", legs shaking, enema of my enemy) - Escalating list landing on a twist — ~15 (condom stockpile, toaster-wife cheating run, ADHD age progression, weed→coffee→tea) - Parallel two-column structures — yeshiva/software, girl-code/guy-code, trebuchet, fantasy-football/D&D - Long-form dark-escalation stories — Staten Island room job (682 lines of version history, the deepest single-bit development in the folder), Cosby time travel, Uber quiet mode - One-liners — ~12 standalone + the two dump reservoirs - Character/sketch premises — ~10 (Tim the time-machine salesman, mohel-comedian, toddlers-on-God)
Topic distribution: sex/dating/performance ~120–140 (dominant, and "sex" modifies most other buckets); self-deprecation/masculinity ~30; Jewish ~30; dark/political ~20; family ~15; AI/tech ~10; ADHD/mental health ~10; drugs ~10; absurdist ~30; comedy-meta ~8; circus ~6. Recurring-Themes' own note stands: circus/physical skill is "underused relative to how skilled he actually is" — 6 files out of 248.
The biographical spine is the connective tissue and it's already explicit in the files: all-boys Jewish school → 10 years separated from women → software engineer → anxious/insecure dater. The Jewish, sex, self-deprecation, and ADHD buckets are all facets of this one autobiography. The June 8 workshop's emotional core (first-girlfriend post-mortem, "avoidance is emotional violence", "collecting Pokémon badges of how toxic I can be") is labeled by the vault itself as the richest material and "largely unwritten as jokes."
Sequencing intent is embedded, not centralized: plant/payoff pairs and running-order instructions live inside individual stage-notes (`Takes me a while to cum` → `If my legs shake`), findable only by opening each file.
4. Council notes
> Format per the comedy-council rules: each voice gives an input, then one collective note. > These are craft-lens observations on what exists — no punchlines written, no verdicts.
Demetri Martin — The one-liner tier is the least maintained layer: ~12 loose files plus 50+ one-liners buried in two dump files nobody has exploded. The wordplay clusters (kegels→kugels, cereal/serial, gorilla glue→couples counseling) show a one-liner sensibility that keeps getting buried inside five-minute bits. Worth asking of every long draft: is this actually three one-liners in a trench coat?
Steven Wright — "Everybody hates me" is a pure logic-premise bit, and its raw drafts run about 3× the length of the clean stage version; the logic is stated, then chased, then re-stated. The corpus's strongest compressed lines already exist ("every new person I meet is one person closer to everybody") — the editing job on that whole vein is subtraction, which happens to be the kind of editing that doesn't need a blank page.
Anthony Jeselnik — The dark material (ick/Treblinka, mein kampf buyers, holocaust/fake boobs, Cosby time travel) mostly exists as single drafts. The Jeselnik method is dozens of alternate last lines per setup, keep one. Nothing in the corpus shows that alternates pass being applied to the dark tier specifically — and the vault's own maps say the thesis line "bails before landing." A persona this self-incriminating can't flinch at its own button.
Gary Gulman — The two empty beats (want / succeed) are exactly where the turn lives in a structured hour, and the maps are right that you can't cut your way there — that beat gets written as sincere prose first, jokes second. Separately: the 100-day challenge is proof a daily finishing mechanism works for you (100/100 Posted). The discipline already existed once; it just wasn't pointed at the two beats that need it.
Mel Brooks — Jew From the Future is the world-building show: performed once, runsheet saved, and a full "Unspoken" B-pile sitting untested. A persona vehicle like that is renewable, not a one-off. And on the Hitler thread running through the corpus (reverse Hitler, Hitler/Uber, mein kampf): the drafts hedge between the dark register and the silly register. The Brooks position is total commitment to silly — pick a register per bit.
Norm Macdonald — The Staten Island room job is the only true long-con development in the folder (682 lines of versions), while the capture system is optimized for 90-word premises. The transcripts show the room responding to stories, and `I don't have enough opinions` (440 words, no button) is sitting there as the truest premise in the new pile.
Mitch Hedberg — A one-liner buried in a dump file never gets tested. His entire catalog was that layer, maintained as a first-class asset: one file or index where every orphan one-liner is visible and countable. Right now the vault literally cannot count yours.
Patrice O'Neal — Everything polished in this vault is jokes about the shield (can't get hard, insecure-man, faking). The June 8 workshop file is the actual subject — the first girlfriend, "avoidance is emotional violence" — and it's the one thing marked "largely unwritten as jokes." The maps calling the turn "mostly unwritten backstory" is self-protection showing up as a structural gap. The room can tell.
Rodney Dangerfield — "I'm always worried, always anxious that something good is going to happen" is a persona engine of the "no respect" type: one line that can metabolize any stray premise. The vault is currently organized by topic (sex, Jewish, ADHD); Rodney's catalog was organized by persona. Most of the 39 orphan premises would resolve faster if the question asked of each were "how does the anxious optimist see this?" rather than "what topic is this?"
Collective note (one voice): You don't have a writing problem — 3,218 captures at 10/day is a firehose. You have a finishing funnel that narrows 40:1 before anything touches a stage, and exactly one event's worth of audience data. The council's collective input: stop adding capture, start closing loops — transcript → edit → mic → transcript. And write the two sincere beats; everything else is a cutting job.
5. Pipeline diagnosis — why editing doesn't stick
Stated problem: writing works from inspiration; sit-down editing doesn't hold interest; listening back to performances generates ideas. The corpus confirms all three:
- Capture mode works. ~10 dictated notes/day, sustained for years. - Blank-page editing mode fails — and the data shows the workaround. 68 "Addendum to…" files: when returning to a bit, the move is append a new note, never edit the old one. The system's own behavior says document-editing is aversive. - Performance-feedback mode works. The bits with embedded instructor/collaborator feedback and the potluck-tested batch are the most developed files in the vault. The workshop cadence that produced June 8 ("biweekly calls, pitch both ways, mic that night, a minute a week") is the only documented process that moved material from draft → staged.
Diagnosis: the pipeline funnels everything toward the one mode that fails (sitting down to edit 3,218 documents), and under-serves the two modes that work (capture, and reacting to heard performance). Apple Notes is not the problem — capture is the healthiest part of the system. The problem is that nothing closes the loop after capture.
Recommended loop (uses only machinery that already exists):
1. Record every set → transcribe → ingest. `Comedy Study/transcribe.py` already works (faster-whisper). After each mic: transcribe, then run `ingest` on the transcript. This converts your strongest editing mode (listening to yourself) into vault updates without any blank-page step. The 4 un-mined June transcripts are the pilot batch. 2. Weekly `ingest` of the untagged frontier. ~215 notes pending; untagged = unprocessed. One run a week keeps the frontier near zero and handles dedup/addendum-joining as it goes (forward-only — merge a bit's addenda only when touching that bit). 3. Replace sit-down editing with `inquisition`. You built it for exactly this: editing as being asked questions instead of staring at a document. Point it first at the two writing gaps (Beat 3 thesis button, Beat 6 resolution) — the only places where cutting can't help. 4. Explode the two one-liner dump files into the one-liner layer so that tier becomes visible and testable. 5. Every mic gets either a transcript or a 5-line result note. April 12 is the only performance-data event in 248 files; the maps can't mark ●◐○ honestly without more of it.
Not recommended: leaving Apple Notes, new capture apps, mass reorganization of existing files (breaks wikilinks — reorgs happen in Obsidian per standing rule), or mass frontmatter rewrites (schema is forward-only).
6. Suggested next operations (pick any)
- `ingest` the 4 June transcripts + the ~215-note frontier (can run in dated batches) - `inquisition` on the Beat 3 thesis button ("good enough to deserve a woman I don't deserve") - `lint` to enumerate the 18 jokes/ duplicate clusters for one-by-one consolidation - Explode `one liner file…` and `acorns brainstorm bits.md` into an indexed one-liner page - Delete `Apple Notes/tax.md` after moving the password to a password manager - Baseline git commit (186 modified files are a benign bulk `stage:` property add)
